What To Expect When Floating

Float Therapy may be the most relaxing thing you'll ever experience!

While floating in a sensory deprivation tank, you may feel weightless. That's because the magnesium-saturated water (aka Epsom salt), keeps you effortlessly buoyant so you don’t have to worry about staying afloat. The calm, warm environment allows only your thoughts to keep you company. Ongoing therapeutic sessions provide increasing benefits to your musculoskeletal and nervous systems.

Float is a therapy, not a one time miracle!

Documentary About Float Therapy

For decades, the benefits of Float Therapy have been enjoyed across the world. If you are new to floating and want to learn more, you may be interested in viewing the full-length documentary Float Nation.

While providing insight into your first float visit, and offering several viewpoints regarding sensory deprivation, note that most of the float tanks you’ll see are pre-built pods. However, our float tank is a custom built float room that provides a more open environment similar to a spacious walk-in shower. You can see our facilities below and on the First Float page.

The Float Nation creators have featured their work on YouTube.

How Does Float Therapy Work?

Float Therapy involves floating in water that matches your body temperature and has a high level of magnesium sulfate (aka Epsom salt). Float Therapy provides physical, mental and emotional benefits, and is intended to help your body transition into a state of deep relaxation so that your mind may rest. In addition to benefits from the float itself, Epsom salt provides anti-inflammatory properties for muscle soreness and joint pain and effects skin and hair softness.

Scientists and medical professionals have been studying Float Therapy in various ways. Research suggests that Float Therapy may help those who are stressed, burned out or have symptoms of anxiety and depression. It may also help people with chronic pain conditions like arthritis, and help with muscle recovery for athletes. While Epsom salt offers anti-inflammatory properties, the main way that Float Therapy provides benefits is by adjusting our sense of weightlessness. Since there is little to no effort needed when floating, our muscles and joints are able to easily relax.

The goal of the float tank environment is to minimize stimulation and external distractions so that we are only focusing on what we can feel and hear in the moment: our heartbeat, breathing and awareness of self. The float tank provides an atmosphere for sensory deprivation and enhances our floating experience to allow us to enter a meditative state more easily than if we were in the real world. This is why the air and water in the float tank matches our skin temperature, and the light and sound of the space can be adjusted to individual preferences. Some of us may need the light or sound to help focus our attention and self-awareness, while others would prefer to keep it both dark and silent.

When your body does not have to use energy to counteract gravity and your mind is not constantly processing large amounts of information, your thoughts are able to freely flow through your mind, and your body is able to rest, de-stress and recover. In the calm and quiet environment of the float tank, your musculoskeletal and nervous systems are able to relax. This environment supports your meditative state and helps to reduce stress and anxiety, increase focus and clarity and inspire creativity while your body experiences hormonal balance, lower blood pressure and improved circulation. Float Therapy has been found to be most beneficial with ongoing sessions and is not a one time miracle. The full relaxation effect of each Float Therapy session usually sets in afterwards and may last a full day or two.

Our Float Tank Environment

Our tank is filled with about 10 inches of water and 1,200 lbs. of pharmaceutical grade magnesium sulfate (aka Epsom salt) bringing the salt concentration to nearly 30%. The water is incredibly dense due to the amount of Epsom salt, and will cause you to easily float no matter what size or shape you are. We follow strict quality control and sanitation procedures to regularly test our water and clean the Float Room including the tank. We run an extensive triple-filtration system between each float session that includes ultraviolet (UV) light, an ozone treatment and a hydrogen peroxide solution.

Both the float tank’s air and water are maintained to match skin temperature to ensure the human body is at its most comfortable in the float tank. We also use a heated air exchange and exhaust system to provide you with heated, fresh air at the beginning of every float session. Our pharmaceutical grade magnesium sulfate is the highest quality Epsom salt available to ensure health and safety as it will be absorbed through the skin.
